Another scammer with heavy African accent entertained me today.
He claimed to be from "JavEEls" city [misreading of "Jacksonville"].
According to the scammer, Javeels is close to Miami.

That scammer posted "Earn Easy Income at Your Free Time" job:

I just spent 4 hours on the phone talking with a scammer.

He started with telling me his fake business story: petroleum drilling operations and hiring security guards to protect these drilling operations.
He explained that they are only hiring Americans, even for work overseas, because he is a big American patriot.

Then he told me his life story (he's 69 now), and, eventually, his true business story.

He sells background checks to "security guard" job seekers for $198 per report.

He promises to job seekers that these background checks go directly to the prospective employer that may hire them for $71,000 - $100,000 per year (too good to be true).

He ran his "Internet business" for about 20 years and changes about 20-30 identities (personal names, corporations, bank accounts, websites) over these years.

He likes President Trump, because Trump is selling hope and is successful at that.
His business somewhat declined since Trump become a President, because more people have jobs now, so the demand for hope is not as high.
His business at the times when "Black President" was at power was more successful (thanks to high unemployment) and he sometimes was making more than $1,000 per day.

2 sisters have the same parents, but in one case Wikipedia describes their father as a "media proprietor", and in another case - as the "publishing tycoon and fraudster":
~~~~~~~~~
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christine_Maxwell
Christine Maxwell is the daughter of Elisabeth Maxwell, a French-born Holocaust scholar and Robert Maxwell, a Czech-born British media proprietor.
~~~~~~~~~
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghislaine_Maxwell
Ghislaine Noelle Marion Maxwell ... is a British socialite and the youngest child of publishing tycoon and fraudster Robert Maxwell.
~~~~~~~~~
Why are there different labels for the same father on daughters' Wikipedia pages?
Because Christine was a co-founder of Magellan (Excite) and Ghislaine was a girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein.
What you can do is to use methods where you [have] do not need any calibration whatsoever and you can still can get pretty good results.
So here on the bottom at the top is the truth image, and this is simulated data, as we are increasing the amount of amplitude error and you can see here ... it's hard to see ... but it breaks down once you add too much gain here. But if we use just closure quantities - we are invariant to that.
So that really, actually, been a really huge step for the project, because we had such bad gains.
And you can notice like at the bottom we get really terrible reconstruction, just cause if it fits the data very well, because you know it maybe wants to smooth out the flux as much as possible and we don't select things like that in the true data.
Millions of people are receiving drugs that aren’t helping them, operations that aren’t going to make them better, and scans and tests that do nothing beneficial for them, and often cause harm.
Why does this fact barely seem to register publicly? Well, as a doctor, I am far more concerned about doing too little than doing too much. It’s the scan, the test, the operation that I should have done that sticks with me—sometimes for years. More than a decade ago, I saw a young woman in the emergency room who had severe pelvic pain. A standard X-ray showed nothing. I examined her and found signs of pelvic inflammatory disease, which is most often caused by sexually transmitted diseases. She insisted that she hadn’t been sexually active, but I didn’t listen. If I had, I might have ordered a pelvic CT scan or even recommended exploratory surgery to investigate further. We didn’t do that until later, by which time the real source of her symptoms, a twisted loop of bowel in her pelvis, had turned gangrenous, requiring surgery. By contrast, I can’t remember anyone I sent for an unnecessary CT scan or operated on for questionable reasons a decade ago. There’s nothing less memorable.
It is different, however, when I think about my experience as a patient or a family member. I can readily recall a disturbing number of instances of unnecessary care. My mother once fainted in the Kroger’s grocery store in our Ohio home town. Emergency workers transported her to a hospital eighty miles away, in Columbus, where doctors did an ultrasound of her carotid arteries and a cardiac catheterization, too, neither of which is recommended as part of the diagnostic workup for someone who’s had a fainting episode, and neither of which revealed anything significant. Only then did someone sit down with her and take a proper history; it revealed that she’d had dizziness, likely from dehydration and lack of food, which caused her to pass out.
.....
The team told him that the combined procedures posed clear risks to his father—for instance, his chance of a stroke would be around fifteen per cent—but that the procedures had become very routine, and the doctors were confident that they were far more likely to be successful than not.
It didn’t occur to Bruce until later to question what the doctors meant by “successful.” The blockages weren’t causing his father’s fainting episodes or any other impairments to his life. The operation would not make him feel better. Instead, “success” to the doctors meant reducing his future risk of a stroke. How long would it take for the future benefit to outweigh the immediate risk of surgery? The doctors didn’t say, but carotid surgery in a patient like Bruce’s father reduces stroke risk by about one percentage point per year. Therefore, it would take fifteen years before the benefit of the operation would exceed the fifteen-per-cent risk of the operation. And he had a life expectancy far shorter than that—very likely just two or three years. The potential benefits of the procedures were dwarfed by their risks.
Bruce’s father had a stroke during the cardiac surgery. “For me, I’m kicking myself,” Bruce now says. “Because I remember who he was before he went into the operating room, and I’m thinking, Why did I green-light an eighty-something-year-old, very diseased man to have a major operation like this? I’m looking in his eyes and they’re like stones. There’s no life in his eyes. There’s no recognition. He’s like the living dead.”
A week later, Bruce’s father recovered his ability to talk, although much of what he said didn’t make sense. But he had at least survived. “We’re going to put this one in the win column,” Bruce recalls the surgeon saying.
“I said, ‘Are you fucking kidding me?’ ”
His dad had to move into a nursing home. “He was only half there mentally,” Bruce said. Nine months later, his father died. That is what low-value health care can be like.
.....
Overtesting has also created a new, unanticipated problem: overdiagnosis. This isn’t misdiagnosis—the erroneous diagnosis of a disease. This is the correct diagnosis of a disease that is never going to bother you in your lifetime. We’ve long assumed that if we screen a healthy population for diseases like cancer or coronary-artery disease, and catch those diseases early, we’ll be able to treat them before they get dangerously advanced, and save lives in large numbers. But it hasn’t turned out that way. For instance, cancer screening with mammography, ultrasound, and blood testing has dramatically increased the detection of breast, thyroid, and prostate cancer during the past quarter century. We’re treating hundreds of thousands more people each year for these diseases than we ever have. Yet only a tiny reduction in death, if any, has resulted.
.....
Over the past two decades, we’ve tripled the number of thyroid cancers we detect and remove in the United States, but we haven’t reduced the death rate at all. In South Korea, widespread ultrasound screening has led to a fifteen-fold increase in detection of small thyroid cancers. Thyroid cancer is now the No. 1 cancer diagnosed and treated in that country. But, as Welch points out, the death rate hasn’t dropped one iota there, either. (Meanwhile, the number of people with permanent complications from thyroid surgery has skyrocketed.) It’s all over-diagnosis.
.....
I spoke to that doctor, Omar Gomez. He said that he’d set about building a strong team around his patients, and that team included specialists such as cardiologists and surgeons. He encouraged his patients to shift to the ones who, he noticed, didn’t subject them to no-value care. He sat with the specialists, and, he said, “I told them, ‘If my patient needs a cardiac cath—by all means, do it. But if they don’t, then don’t do it. That’s the only thing I ask.’ ”
The passage of the Affordable Care Act, in 2010, created opportunities for physicians to practice this kind of dedicated care. The law allows any group of physicians with five thousand or more Medicare patients to contract directly with the government as an “accountable-care organization,” and to receive up to sixty per cent of any savings they produce.
Bitcoin is at ~$9000 (down from ~$14000 when I posted my Bitcoin forecast).
Hopefully it would keep falling down to the price where it belongs (~$0).
dennisgorelik: 2020-06-13 in my home office (Default)
Couple of my friends asked me if they should invest into bitcoin.
Here is my answer:
1) Bitcoin is a scam.
If you invest in bitcoin, you have a 90% chance to become a victim of a confidence game (AKA "sucker").
2) There is no legitimate intrinsic value in crypto-currencies.
There is no legitimate activity that bitcoin does that more traditional financial tools (such as banks or PayPal) do not do yet.
3) Financial transactions that government can not control - is not a feature, it is a bug of bitcoin.
Imagine that somebody anonymously orders killing you with payment over bitcoin.
Would you like your government be able to trace such assassination fee over bitcoin?
I, personally, would very much like to grant the government such tracking ability. I believe you would too.
If bitcoin supports such tracking - then it is neither feature nor bug.
If bitcoin does not support such tracking (and guarantees anonymity of financial transactions) then it is a bug and the government would crush bitcoin for that bug.
4) Limited supply of bitcoin is not a feature, but a bug.
United States Federal Reserve intentionally changes supplies of available dollars in order to keep inflation at around 2%/year.
If it made sense to have a limited supply of a currency, then the Federal Reserve would do that. No crypto-currency is needed for that.
5) "But bitcoin grew up to $18,000 - I want to get in"
Try to buy a powerball lottery ticket instead. It would be much less expensive exercise. And for measly ~$10 you would still have a chance to win $50M.
At this stage bitcoin is a clear bubble, propped up by "investors" who do not understand what they are investing into.
Couple of days ago a scam team, in order to sign up for premium membership on postjobfree.com -- hacked couple of real business emails: [email protected] and [email protected]
Both emails seems to belong to real estate agents.
I was able to find and reach actual owners of these email addresses on the phone.
They do not seem to be very concerned about their email addresses being compromised.
Both email owners confirmed that they did not make premium orders on our web site and then indicated that they prefer to continue with their other business instead of digging deeper into that email hacking ...
How much would you care if you learned that your email account was hacked?
A job seeker asked me if "Reliance Capital Limited" company that contacted her is a legitimate employer.
Judging by the company name and the way they communicated with her (text-only) - it probably is a scam.
But in order to find out for sure if recruiter is real deal:
1) Call them (scammers frequently try to avoid talking on the phone and hide behind text messages and emails).
2) Assume that there could be a scammer on another end and do not reveal your sensitive personal details.
3) Typical signs of scammers:
- Bad phone connection quality (because scammers frequently use internet proxy).
- _Heavy_ foreign accent from a poor country (typically Nigerian accent, but occasionally could be Russian or some other accent). The scammer may insist that they are in the US or in London.
- Incoherent business story (ask them what they sell to their customers).
Dealing with fraudulent job posting is a part of my daily routine.
Usually these cases are simple and scammers are easy to identify:
- Job descriptions with easily recognizable pattern of fraud.
- Heavy "African" (Nigerian?) accent on the phone.
- Bad quality phone connection (because they frequently call over poor Internet connection and use IP proxies).
They rarely learn from their mistakes which makes it easy to spot them next time.
Last several days I got unusual level of attention from more sophisticated ring of scammers from Russia.
Work as the courier
Initially scammers used free email address ([email protected]) for their account.
I got a call from a girl with some Russian accent (not as strong as my own accent though).
She called herself Jess Entoro and claimed to currently be in Atlanta, GA.
She claimed to represent TOPS Consulting, but did not have access to @tops.ru email.
Here's her job posting
Title: Work as the courier
Work as the courier in the consulting company.
That job posting looks quite suspicious, but "Jess" was somewhat convincing in her business story, so initially I was not sure if I am rejecting fraudster or a proper employer.
(BTW, we spoke mostly Russian, which was fun for a change).
When I asked "Jess" what phone number she called from - she gave me my own phone number.
When I said to her that this is my phone number - she gave me 1-678-999-4505, which, surprisingly, worked.
I told "Jess" that her free [email protected] email is a reason for rejection.
She learned.
Unfortunately for scammers, it is easy to see that hr-sunrise.com was created only several days ago:
This time [email protected] asked me (by email) to talk with his secretary.
"Secretary" called me from 1-347-349-5499 and named herself "Skyler".
"Skyler" spoke pure American English without any Russian accent and claimed to live and be born in Columbus, OH.
She told me somewhat convincing "business" story about how they help their customers to evaluate new partnerships and identify fraud.
She said that pretty much any company [that buys or sell goods] could be their customer.
However she was not interested in considering PostJobFree as a customer for their services (business that is not interested in selling their product is usually a fraud).
I asked Skyler if she is using "@hr-sunrise.com" email.
She said "yes".
Then I asked her for how long she's been using that email, and she told me "couple of years".
I re-asked her 3 of times in order to be sure we understand each other.
She played "I do not have that much time" card and asked for a refund.
I promised her that and we finished our conversation.
Several minutes later, out of curiosity, I called her back (1-347-349-5499), but that number simply do not connect (silence).
I also found that fraudsters posted the same "job" on craigslist.
Within a day craigslist deleted this posting:
